This day – it’s the only one you have.
You can start using it or watch it drift away.
Or you can do both.
You can observe it drifting, and say – never again!
I am going to use this moment for what please me.
I am going to take the action I have been holding off on, and simply do the thing I want to be.
If you have been trained to believe in the lie called procrastination, I’ve just given you the clue you need.
Procrastination is indeed a lie. It’s just an elaborate way to say you’re afraid to do something.
More likely, once again, you’ve been trained to think you’re afraid.
It’s a subtle thing, training someone to think they’re afraid.
Because after you’ve been ridiculed or discouraged a couple times, the trainer can move on, confident you will torment yourself automatically for years without direct oversight.
For the trainer, this is very efficient.
For you, again, it’s just torment.
And once you’ve been trained to behave in this manner you may be familiar with the experience of luxuriating in your self-punishment.
Thinking about it, making jokes at your own expense and so on.
And at the end of the day you’ve let slip away, right before sleep, again, that feeling of agony.
But as I said at the beginning, it doesn’t have to be this way.
Since we’ve already engaged in this short observation, you can now move into action.
Remind yourself that your self-interest is your only concern.
Take a deep breath and remember what it must have been like to be a baby, fighting to live on your own in the moments after birth.
Remember it is your responsibility to make something of your life.
More to the point, remember that you are the only one capable of doing the things you want to do and you only have to answer to yourself.
And the last step in the hidden philosophy, as always, is action.
Do a small thing.
Enjoy the movement.
Knock off a small list of tasks that have been bothering you.
Clear the deck for the big thing.
Launch into the big thing, for your own satisfaction and yours alone.
See it through for as long as your energy and attention can hold.
When you’re done, consider how joyful it was to live for your own pleasure.
Or your own profit.
This is your day and you can use it to increase your good – which first lies in recognizing that your are the sole owner and creator of your life, you are the patron and the benefactor, and you are the hand that direct the voyage created in your own mind.
You might enjoy this process so much you’ll do it all again tomorrow!
