If you’re currently employed the first step to getting a raise is to update your resume.
We recommend doing so after you’ve spent at least a couple of days considering the hidden philosophy.
Specifically, the idea that your survival is your primary goal in life. And following from this, expand your appreciation of survival to include all manner of self-interest.
This includes making more money, achieving more professionally, having more authority and control over your career.
That you deserve what you believe you deserve.
In this case, a raise.
Armed with this organic approach to professional self-esteem, redo your resume. Find areas where you can emphasize the good you did.
Look at yourself as something that a company would truly want to work with.
Understand that any organization only hires people – especially at higher rates of pay – will help them achieve their self-interest.
Of course, organizations are amoral and only care about making more money.
And because you are willing and able and can demonstrate your ability to help a company make more money, you can in turn charge more for your services.
Then send your resume out, at the very least posted in the appropriate channels on the Internet.
Perhaps even more important, you should be conducting yourself as someone who deserves more money, right now, today.
Then make sure to go about your daily tasks at your current job is if you already have the position that command a higher salary.
This is giving yourself a raise from the inside out.
Again, start with the idea that you need, want and deserve more.
Then redo your resume with an eye toward the new salary goal you have set for yourself.
Then go back to your existing job and act as if you are the person who deserves that higher rate of pay because you’re delivering more value to your present company.
This may or may not lead to raise where you are right now. The glorious thing is that you don’t care.
You know your higher rate of pay is at hand, and your current company can match or beat that offer but either way it matters nothing to you.
The only thing it does matter to you is your self-interest.
That you want more money. That you deserve more money. And that you have more money.
Of course, we recommend continuing to study the ideas of the hidden philosophy as you go through this process.
Begin with the idea of your survival. That you are responsible for ensuring your life continues on this earth. And that your survival includes your self-interest – which includes money and professional achievement.
But don’t just want more money. Put yourself in the mindset of someone who is earning the kind of salary you want.
You may get it right where you are, or at the next job you apply for.
You may even get it from an idea you have about offering a product or service on your own.
But you have to start with raising your idea of what you are worth from the inside out.
