When he sits down to write he says to himself, “This reaches a million people.”
Then he breathes, exhales, and starts the timer.
His mind is clear. He is focused on the purpose of what he is doing.
Communicating to an audience.
He has reached a million with some projects. Others, not so much.
He never sits down just “to write.”
From experience he knows that aimless self-expression always hits its mark. Which is none at all.
When he sits down to reach a million people he understands there is something at stake.
Every one of those million people have competing demands for their time.
He has to say something important enough, true enough, to command their attention.
And lead them where he wants them to go.
Because the goal of his work is to direct people to act. Perhaps to believe in a course of action. Perhaps to consider an alternate fact.
Because he writes with a purpose he has a better chance of reaching some of those people.
Because he writes with a purpose his work is always getting better, increasing his chances of reaching some of those people.
And because he understands that a person with a goal always persuades those without one, he persists.
