For most of us, our lives unfold according to a vague plan. We have an idea of what we want and get on the motorized walkway of life, moving in the general direction of a general idea.
We work hard, deal with glitches along the way, and are happy with the small victories that come.
Occasionally, we see a shiny carrot that strikes our fancy and start clipping it off to get that reward.
And when we get it? Well, it’s okay.
Doesn’t seem quite as tasty as we imagined.
But then there are moments when something greater is awakened.
We see a bigger possibility.
Something off the restrictive treadmill on which we are churning it out.
And this idea acts like a trigger – opening up a flood of emotion, and ability – that gets us to reach deeper inside and do things we didn’t think were possible.
This greater goal – which is often a complete reworking of what we thought our lives were supposed to be – awakens our Willpower.
And with our Willpower we realize we can build our own path – even construct our own self-propelled walkway to this newly discovered dream.
With our Willpower unleashed we can achieve more in a week than what might have taken a whole year in the past.
And along the way, we feel energized – truly alive and in charge of the direction in which we are heading.
And when we achieve that goal?
It tastes sweeter than any carrot that might have been dangled before us.
And as we look back on the journey (while eating that carrot!) we understand it was because our Willpower was awakened in the process.
And that we have much more than the carrot, much more than the memory of something cool that we did.
We now have a developed capacity within ourselves to choose new goals, to keep living the life we have come to enjoy so much.
A life that is fully engaged.
A life directed by our own Power of Will.
And because this idea sounds intriguing to you, let’s consider for a moment the 3 most common ways Willpower is awakened.
You will recognize each of these 3 steps, because they have happened to you in some measure – we all share the same human experience, after all.
Our goal here is to think about them in order to be able to consciously choose to awaken our Willpower – today – and not in some distant future when “you’ve had enough” of the treadmill you’re on, so here goes:
Willpower is awakened by Danger. This is the heroic kind of Willpower made popular in movies and media. The parent who rescues a child from a burning building, or the athlete who comes back from a serious injury.
When Willpower is awakened by danger it is almost a completely biological response – the survival instinct kicking in, pushing our conscious mind to the side and saving the day.
And while Willpower awakened by danger satisfies the imagination – and makes for great memories for the actors – it is not often repeatable. The episode took so much from the participants, and often occurred in such a short period of time, not much could have been learned as to how to use it as a daily habit.
While the reward may have been great, the episode almost instantly becomes a frozen artifact – as in “look at what I did, that one time, when all appeared lost!”
RegisterWillpower is awakened by Desire. This is the yearning type of Willpower when someone is denied some basic need of life, or perhaps a lifestyle quality, whose absence can no longer be tolerated.
It is often about getting a job or new career, or a romantic partner – and it can be also about achieving a big “thing” such as a house, car or vacation. A big marker that appears to be a dividing line between an old state of being and a new one that the actor just has to, has to have.
The kind of Willpower awakened by desire can be process-oriented. You have a goal and it is most likely a big one, such as losing 20-50 pounds of body weight and getting in shape for that marathon, or again, buying a car (with leather seats and a moonroof!).
With the Willpower born of desire you settle into a rhythm – of reminding yourself of your goal, and the steps, and repeating those steps until you achieve your aim.
Often you will pursue this desire to the exclusion of other things – and this can be necessary with such major life processes as getting a college degree or progressing in your career.
And while this process can often bleed over into other areas of your life, the danger with Willpower born of desire is that you can become too tunnel-visioned in your approach to be able to feel that you are living a balanced approach to creating the kind of life of which you can be proud (cue the smelling of roses cliché!).
Willpower is awakened by Decision. This is the mature approach to Willpower and clearly the one we favor. It can include elements of Danger and Desire – a combination of life events that “push you to the edge” and lead to the Decision where you sit down and make a clear plan that you are going to use your Power of Will to reshape your experience.
Willpower born of Decision is methodical. It starts with contemplating that you are Will – that your existence is driven by the self-interest of survival and self-care.
And from this, you understand that you have Will – to think about your power and make decisions based on your own ideas about life.
And from the experience of being in possession of your Will, you make decisions, setting goals and standards for yourself that you are going to follow, no matter what.
And from these decisions, you create plans of action – concrete steps that you repeat over and over, that move you in the direction of your goal.
And these actions are strengthened every time you remember your decisions made with the Power of Will, creating a “virtuous cycle” of Willpower that continues driving you toward your result.
Willpower born of decision yields the greatest benefit compared to the previous two triggers that awaken your Willpower.
Because you have consciously made the decision to awaken your own Willpower, and work continually on its development, you achieve not only your immediate set of goals, but also create a new skillset within yourself that drives you into the future.
The future course you have set for yourself.
Think about the times in your life when you have used your own Willpower. We believe you will find a mix of all three triggers in your own history – and that you will come to the conclusion that deciding to awakened your own Power of Will is the best course of action.
